The varsity Coginchaug girls volleyball team had their first game, under a new coaching staff, on Monday, Sept. 12 against Cromwell High School and had their second game on Wednesday, Sept. 15 against East Hampton High School. The team’s current record is 1-1.
The Lady Devils had a tough loss against Cromwell; Cromwell took the first two sets with a score of 25-14 and 25-20.They came back in the third set to win 25-15 but lost 25-17 in the fourth and final set.
Although the Devils had to suffer a tough first loss, freshman Molly Shields started her career on varsity with 23 attempts, 4 kills, 4 blocks, and 2 aces.
The team was able to turn around on Wednesday against one of their biggest rivals, East Hampton, to take their first win. Although East Hampton won the first set 18-25, Coginchaug rallied and came back to win the next three, 25-20, 28-26, and 25-22.
After the game on Wednesday, senior captain Megi Zaclli said, “I am excited to see how the season will turn out; I think that this year’s volleyball team has a lot of potential.”
The Lady Devils volleyball team’s next game will be on Friday, Sept. 16 at home against Haddam-Killingworth.
