With temperatures in the mid 30s the Coginchaug Blue Devils suited up for their homecoming game versus Nonnewaug. Despite the freezing cold temperatures, plenty of fans still came out to cheer on the team.
In addition, Coginchaug held their Senior Day where they honored all the seniors for dedicating four years to Coginchaug football. The football team put on a ceremony where the seniors walked through a row of cheerleaders and underclassmen football players. They eventually met up with their parents at the end of the row. After the ceremony the team was pumped up and ready to get the win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
When Coginchaug got the ball for the first time, they did a great job of mixing running and passing plays, and eventually they got the ball to the one-yard line where senior quarterback Jake Ober ran it in for a one-yard touchdown and gave Coginchaug 7-0 lead.
Throughout the game, not only did the Devils score a lot of points they also played solid defense . Even when bending, they did not break. When Nonnewaug got inside the 20-yard line, the Blue Devils forced a turnover on downs and got the ball back. After this stop they never looked back. Coginchaug scored 21 points throughout the rest of the half, including Jake Ober’s touchdown pass to Devin Rodrigue and a 60-yard punt return from senior Kevin Crompton. As if that wasn’t enough, senior Andrew VanSteenbergan intercepted the pass and Coginchaug scored another touchdown, posting a halftime score of 28-0.
After a halftime show from the cheerleaders and the pep band, the game was back on, and Coginchaug was looking to build their lead. After an opening touchdown by Nonnewaug, the Blue Devils got the ball back, and Jake Ober ran the ball 72 yards for a touchdown, immediately bringing life back to the crowd and the team.
After their final score, the Blue Devils sat on their lead and ran the clock down, finally taking a knee to end the game. The final score was 36-7, Devils. It was a great game to watch and a great win for the team as they keep their playoff hopes alive and move on to their next game.
