Battling through Shoreline Quarterfinals

Battling+through+Shoreline+Quarterfinals

The Coginchaug boys basketball team hosted the Creed Wolves for the quarter-finals of the Shoreline Tournament. Prior to this game, the Devils lost a close game on the road to Creed by a score of 44-49. Following this loss, the Devils dramatically improved their resume to take hold of the No. 3 seed in Shorelines, while the Wolves stood at the No. 6 seed. The boys knew this game would not be easily won but knew that their 7-3 home record, and Creed’s 3-7 road record, could potentially work in their favor.

Creed got off to an early 3-0 lead, but thanks to an offensive effort by J. Murphy and Jameson, the Devils soon got up to a 7-3 lead. The Wolves full court press proved difficult for the Devils who had multiple turnovers as a result of this tactic. The Devils were, however, able to hold off the Wolves for the majority of the turnovers. Noticing a couple of flaws in the full court press, the Devils were able to inch their way past Creed to take a 28-19 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Creed used its 3-point range abilities to work away at the Devil’s lead, but the Devils had a response for almost every effort put in by the Wolves. The boys, as a result, headed into the 4th quarter with a  42-35 lead.

Creed was on a hot streak in the final quarter, draining all of their shots and cutting the lead to only three points. A Creed player was on the brink of dunking on the Devils, but the miss allowed the Devils to secure the ball, forcing the Wolves to foul in order to gain possession again. The Devils were able to hold their own from the foul line, winning 55-47. Jameson led the way for all scorers with 19 points (9 from 3-point land), while J. Murphy supplied 11 points, and G. Murphy pitched in 10 of his own.

The Devils will move on to the semi-finals of the Shoreline Tournament, as they travel to East Hampton  on Tuesday, Feb. 28 to face the No. 2 ranked Bellringers, in what should be a great matchup.
