Softball Finally Beats North Branford After Six Years

 Fly ball to the infield.

On Wednesday, May 8, the girls softball team beat North Branford away 2-1. This was the first win over the T-Birds for Coginchaug in six years, giving the girls confidence to finish their regular season and head into the postseason. The team came together for this win with contributions from each player.

The girls started off the first inning hitting the ball but hitting right to the North Branford players. They had a hard time finding gaps for the first few innings. Once the girls got their timing down and started being more patient, they hit spots they needed to in order to score runs.

In the top of the 6th inning, junior Taylor McDermott started off the inning with a single. Sophomore Dana Boothroyd had a base hit to move McDermott to second. Senior captain Alex Grenier hit a ball to right-center, scoring both runners.

“They were on base at the right time,” Grenier said. “It was a key hit because it was getting late in the game, and we needed to score a few runs.”

In the bottom of the sixth, North Branford’s center-fielder hit a triple to right center. This gave them a strong start to the inning. Their next batter scored the runner on third.

“In the bottom of the sixth, we were a little nervous after the center-fielder found a gap for a triple,” senior captain Caroline Fournier said. “We knew we had to play solid defense and shut them down the rest of the game.”

Sophomore Kelly Boothroyd came in to relieve sophomore pitcher Amalia DeMartino in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kelly Boothroyd struck out three consecutive batters with bases loaded to get the girls out of the innings. She came back bottom of the seventh inning and shut them out again.

The girls were excited after beating North Branford because of their six-year losing streak to them during regular season, not to mention multiple Shoreline Championship games. They are playing them again home on
