From November 11th to 22nd, Coginchaug’s National Honor Society (NHS) is hosting a Thanksgiving and holiday food drive to benefit local food pantry, Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown, CT. Through these dates, the National Honor Society encourages students to donate non-perishable and canned goods. The collection box is located by the entrance to the library.
Despite 2024 being the inaugural year of the Thanksgiving and holiday food drive, Coginchaug’s National Honor Society hopes to be able to collect enough items to make a large and impactful contribution to Amazing Grace in order to support families in need this holiday season. In an effort to promote this, Coginchaug’s National Honor Society chapter has partnered with North Branford High School’s National Honor Society chapter to host a competition between the schools, with the goal to collect more items than the other to donate to their respective food pantries. Both schools’ food drives are “happening for the same amount of time [and] the same days, within each school” and are both “being organized by the school’s NHS,” according to Coginchaug’s National Honor Society President Sophie Kulas.
Kulas described the idea as a “ultimately a play on the natural rivalry between Coginchaug and North Branford” and hopes that the competition will “create more of an incentive for students to donate.”
