RSD13 to Remove Mask Mandate

Today, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Schuch announced that Regional School District 13 schools will be making masks optional beginning February 28th.

In a ParentSquare bulletin, he wrote that, “ We realize that this decision represents a significant shift from how we have operated for almost two years, and we ask each of you to carefully consider whether or not wearing masks makes sense for your individual situation.”

Masks will still be required in specific settings throughout school, such as in the nurses’ office,  the bus, and when returning from COVID isolation. Other activities, such as guidelines for music from the state music educator’s association, may still require masks.

A common theme regarding the announcement is choice. Parents still can make their own specific decisions towards their students in regards to masking, asking them to still wear them.

“We will respect the decisions of all families, learners, and employees as it pertains to wearing masks,” Schuch wrote, “and will expect that respect from all of our learners and employees as we make this shift.”

Not all COVID-19 related protocols will be removed however. COVID cases will still be reported and recorded every day by the district, and COVID isolation will still remain for cases. Once returning from school, students are required by the state to continue masking. Student athletes will still have to follow the guidelines provided by the CIAC.

Coginchaug students are divided on the issue of removing masks. A freshman, who wished to remain anonymous, said that, “I’m glad we get to take off masks. It’s been two years and I miss people’s faces.”

A senior, who also wished to remain anonymous, said that, “I feel much safer with my mask on.”
