The Coginchaug Girls Basketball team defeated the Morgan Huskies 45-43 on Tuesday, February 25th, securing their title as Shoreline Champions! They opened the game with a three point shot by Maddy Benbow, getting the game off to a great start for Coginchaug. After missing opportunities on the offensive side of the game, they ended up trailing Morgan for most of the game, but their crowd, consisting of many RSD 13 families, students and teachers did not lose hope, and neither did the team.
After half time the girls played lockdown defense and picked things up on the offensive side of the game. They took advantage of turnovers by Morgan to rack up points. In the last three minutes of the game the team pulled ahead after a nine point deficit going into the second half. Senior captain Sophie Farr, the team’s point guard, who scored thirty-two points in the game said, “The win was great for our team and the program. It’s been a long time since the girls team has won and it is amazing we were able to get it done. The game was close but our whole team stayed in it and fought back to make it happen. Every player made an impact that game, and our defense in the fourth quarter led us to beat Morgan. I am really excited to see what we will do in States.”
Congratulations to: Sophie Farr, Cailyn Smolley, Morgan Cesario, Natalia Serrano Smith, Maddy Benbow, Sydney Ross, Aaliyah Watson, Peyton Smolley, Shayla Vazquez, Molly Kulas, Aiyana Donecker, Arabella DiPentima, Anna Meisenkothen, Aurora Kobus, Lia Wilson and manager, Lily Montgomery!
