The softball season officially started on Saturday, April 5th. The Blue Devils traveled to Old Lyme to face the Wildcats. Emily Allen pitched seven innings, striking out eight batters. Coginchaug had hits from Kenzie Bearor, Bella Tosto, Lily Montgomery, Liz Gargano, Ava Ekblade, Taryn Adams, Bella Derenzo and Anna Meisenkothen. These hits and Emily’s solid start led the team to defeat Old Lyme 7-4.
The team has started off with a record of 4-3, not only defeating Old Lyme, but also Old Saybrook/Westbrook, Portland and East Hampton, with losses to Hale-Ray, Fairfield Warde and EO Smith. The girls look to have a successful season ahead of them. Coach Steve DeMartino says, “The team is young and needs to learn how to work together and mature on the field, but I expect us to have a winning record and get better each game.” One of the team’s captains, Emily Allen, shares, “After losing all our catchers last year, we knew this season was [going to] be rough, but after just the first couple weeks of seeing how the team was, I believe if we keep working hard and growing, we will do very well.”
Lily Montgomery and Bella Tosto have stepped up as the team’s new catchers. With no catching experience, they are learning fast. Despite Coginchaug’s catcher troubles, they have started the season off with a winning record. Good luck this season to Emily Allen, Lily Montgomery, Kenzie Bearor, Natalia Serrano-Smith, Bella DeRenzo, Liz Gargano, Ava Ekblade, Addie Buckheit, Anna Mesienkothen, Taryn Adams, Bella Tosto, Gabby Marques and Kennedy Painter. Let’s get some more wins!
