The National Honor Society was created on March 1, 1921 with the idea that every member would be an extraordinary example of Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character. These four pillars have helped carry NHS throughout the years. There are now more than 16,000 chapters within the United States and overseas, each encouraging high school students to be well rounded and resourceful.
While the NHS has many alumni that are apart of the everyday workforce, there are also members who have found much success in unique careers, such as Cindy Crawford who became a model, Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, Fred Rogers, or better known as Mr. Rogers, and Connecticut’s own Wilson Taylor, CEO of Cigna Corp who attended Windsor Locks High School.
This year the chapter at Coginchaug Regional High School accepted 24 new members. Combined, many of these new members participate in sports year round, do community outreach through clubs and organizations, and have joined the workforce through a variety of jobs.
These new members will be helping NHS start up a new service project for this upcoming winter. They will be hosting a blanket drive in the CRHS library some time soon, organizing a session to make blankets. These blankets will be donated to a shelter or shelters to donate these blankets to.
We all can’t wait to see all the amazing work these new members will do throughout this year and the next!
