Coginchaug’s Girls Basketball team wrapped up their regular season on February 18, with an unfortunate loss to Westbrook. The girls finished 7-13 overall and 6-9 in league play earning a seventh seed for the upcoming Shoreline Tournament. This was in spite of having a young team with only one senior, Co-Captain Sydney Ross.
Let’s get into the stats from this regular season. Junior Peyton Smolley and Junior Co-Captain Aaliyah Watson, led the team in points per game averaging 8.8 and 8.6, respectively. Smolley was the team’s top overall scorer with a total of 141 points, followed by Watson with 138. Junior Molly Kulas led the team in assists this season with a total of 37, while also leading the team with an average of 3.4 steals per game. Co-Captain Sydney Ross led the team in rebounds, averaging 10.2 rebounds per game. Ross was a dominant force on the boards this season.
This season brought many challenges for the girls, and overall, coming off last year’s season where the team brought home the Shoreline Championship title, they did not have the season everyone was hoping for. Co-Captain Sydney Ross highlighted some of the challenges they faced this year. She shared, “It was really challenging losing our seniors. We also lost a potential starter this year to injury, so it was hard for us to find scorers on the team, especially since last year we heavily depended on Sophie Farr for points. I’d say it was a highlight and definitely very rewarding to make it into both shoreline and state playoffs. Despite all that, I’m just very grateful for my team and being able to play the sport!”
The girls will be taking on the two seed North Branford on Saturday, February 28, at 7pm at North Branford High School. Come and show them your support! Good luck in the postseason to the entire team!
