The Coginchaug boys soccer team is back in action this season, with a record of 1-3-1, but senior captain Korben Paul is optimistic about the rest of the season and is not fazed by the losses.
The first three games were rough with three losses versus Lyman Hall, Cromwell and Montville and then a tie versus East Hampton. However, in their last game they beat H-K, a rival of their team according to Paul, 2-1.
This season is also different with new head coach, Matt Thompson. Thompson was the JV coach of the soccer team before stepping up to the head varsity coach. “He has been really good,” said Paul. “He has been good with the younger kids and also has done more conditioning than the last coach.”
When asked who has made the teamsuccessful this season, Paul said, “All of the captains have pushed the team, and also our goalie, Kyle Roberts, has been a big help.” Being a captain for Paul has also changed how he leads the team. “It has made me more vocal on the field with the team,” he said.
Even with losses, Paul is optimistic for the rest of the season: “We just have to improve on the mistakes made in our losses, and after the big win versus H-K, the team is ready to get some wins.”
