Cheering into a New Year

The cheerleading team kicks off their year by supporting other teams while working towards competition season. After having a successful season last year, the team looks to be even better this year.

Last year, the cheerleading team placed second in Shorelines, went to the Team of the Year competition (the cheer version of State Opens) and placed top six at States;current senior captains Jenny Chadd and Erin Harlow were named First Team All-State and First Team All-Shorelines.

Looking towards this year Chadd said, “ We lost some good seniors, but we also gained some good talent in the freshmen who are very tight and clean,” noting that their jumps are also very good.  Junior Jean Orosz, also had the same mentality of looking to a great season and an improved team stating, “ I think we are going to have a great season. We have a lot of strong people, our bases and flyers are good.” She also noted how their stunt groups have been working hard on improved and more complicated routines this year.

New to Coginchaug cheerleading is the co-op with the East Hampton cheerleaders. According to Chadd, “ East Hampton is going pretty well, we are doing combined cheers” Although seemingly tough to combine two schools that used to cheer against each other, the cheerleaders are doing what they can to come across as a united front.

The cheerleading team looks promising for competition season but right now you can find them cheering on other teams. They plan to attend all the senior nights for every fall sport, the Dig Pink game for volleyball, and of course all the football games. Cheerleaders always support other teams; however, the cheer team is competing at a competition in Thursday, Oct. 11th, under the lights at Middletown High School. Head out to support the girls who support the rest of us.
