Yields five 8-oz servings.
What you’ll need:
- ½ cup sugar (Stevia can be a healthier alternative to this. It is natural and has no carbs or calories and does not raise blood sugar.)
- ¼ cup Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa
- Dash of salt
- ⅓ cup of hot water
- 4 cups (1 qt.) of milk (Almond milk could be a bit healthier and also adds a little bit of sweetness. It is enriched with nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and the antioxidant vitamin E; however, it contains very little protein.)
- ¾ teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Mini marshmallows or whipped cream (optional.)
- Stir together the sugar, (or alternative sweetener) cocoa and salt in a medium saucepan, then stir in water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
- Keep stirring and boiling for about 2 minutes.
- Add your milk, still stirring constantly. Reduce heat to serving temperature, do not boil.
- Remove from heat and add vanilla.
- Beat with a whisk until the mixture is foamy.
- Serve topped with marshmallows or whipped cream if desired.
