PRESS RELEASE: Annual CRHS Unified Sports Wilda Castro Memorial Basketball Game

The CRHS Unified Sports team will take on Middletown High School at the annual Wilda Castro Memorial Basketball Game on Feb. 5 during Coginchaug’s period four (10:05-11:12 a.m.) in the gymnasium. The game will be preceded by a moment of silence in honor of Castro, a former Coginchaug special education teacher and Unified Sports coach who passed away in 2016.

 

Many members of the Coginchaug community will be contributing to the event. The Chamber Choir will sing the national anthem, and the Pep Band will play tunes during the action; additionally, the cheerleaders will be performing throughout the game. During halftime, Strong and Memorial Unified Sports teams will participate in relay races. 

The event will feature Beau Doherty, creator of the Unified Sports model and current CT Special Olympics President, who will give a few words before tip-off. Also making special appearances are various Unified Sports and Special Olympics staff:

Coginchaug students, with permission from their period four teacher, are encouraged to come enjoy the game and support the Unified Sports team. The event will be live-streamed for the public (YouTube link should be forthcoming).
