Coginchaug football kicked off the season against Cromwell with a full crowd and suspenseful game. Many fans came out Saturday, Sept. 12 to watch the Devils. The crowd ranged from the youth football team, parents, alumni, grandparents, and more.

Coginchaug started off their season strong! Neither team’s defense would let up a goal. The whole first quarter the ball was going back and forth in the center of the field. However, in the first two minutes of the second quarter the quarterback, senior and Team co-captain Westly Benjunas, handed off the ball to senior half-back Parker Tregoning who ran through a pocket in the line and up the middle for a touchdown!

Towards the middle of of the second quarter, the situation looked bad. Cromwell was able to get an interception off of Coginchaug and get within 20 yards of the end zone. It was dangerous territory, luckily, Cromwell wasn’t allowed to hold the ball too long. On Cromwell’s first down, they threw and Michael Cross was there for the interception as if to say, “Not on my field!” and possession was returned to the Devils.

Tregoning ran a 35-yard carry in the fourth quarter. Sadly, however, the game finished 14-20, with Cromwell emerging the victor with a touchdown in the last three minutes.

This loss isn’t going to stop the Blue Devils though. Just after the game in an on-field interview, senior co-captain Cam Powers said, “It’s only the first game of many. This loss will teach us what to do next time, and we plan to win our next game!”

As for the crowd turnout, I hope too see the same turn out for spectators if not more this Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1:00 p.m., home against Ellington.
