On October 14th, Coginchaug DECA hosted its fourth annual golf tournament at Indian Springs Golf Course in Middlefield. The event was a huge success, raising over $4,000 for Coginchaug DECA. This year’s tournament winners were Coginchaug graduates: Kevin Kilroy, AJ Eames, Kyle Kilroy, and Andrew Meadows. They shot 8 under par to win.
Proceeds from the tournament help offset the cost of Coginchaug DECA members’ participation in the annual International Career Development Conference (ICDC). This year’s conference will be held in Orlando. DECA fundraisers like this help to ensure that every student who qualifies to compete can attend the ICDC competition.
Students in DECA put a lot of effort into planning this event. Committees such as hospitality, sponsorships, registration, and raffle are formed to help plan the tournament. Each committee has a student as the lead who sets goals and objectives, organizes resources, sets deadlines, and assigns tasks. The committees work together to make sure the tournament is a success. In addition to raising money for the club, DECA members gain valuable leadership, event planning, and marketing skills. DECA members start planning the golf tournament in the spring.
Business teacher and DECA advisor, Mr. Ryan Donecker said: “This has been a great tournament for the past four years. Each year it keeps getting better and better. And we are very grateful to Indian Springs Golf Course for their hospitality, support and guidance.” DECA is also grateful to all the event sponsors, raffle item donors, and golfers who support this fundraising event and learning opportunity for Coginchaug students.
